Greetings to all,
Over the past few years, the Shelburne Supermarket has been making efforts to become more and more aware of our business’ effect on our local environment, as well as the global ecosystem. We’ve made slight changes here and there in order to become more green. We changed and enhanced our recycling practices, cut down on food waste in our produce and deli departments, and have strove to use, as well as promote, more renewable energy sources. Most of these changes have been smaller steps taken over time and have been somewhat imperceptible to our customers.
Our next planned change, however, is going to directly affect our customers. Beginning on the first of the year, 2010, the Shelburne Supermarket will be eliminating the use of plastic shopping bags. There will still be plastic available for uses such as packaging meat and/or produce products, but the general use plastic shopping bags will no longer be available. Statistics have shown the amount of waste that is produced through the manufacturing, distribution, use, and discarding of these bags. Did you know that there is a “continent” of plastic bags that has formed in the Pacific Ocean. Over 50 years of careless dumping has resulted in a plastic “land mass” twice the size of Texas.
We understand that this change may not be welcomed by all. Many customers prefer plastic bags over other forms, as well as reuse our plastic bags for other purposes. We hope that our customers will understand our motives for this move and not hold ill will toward us.
Alongside our desire to eliminate plastic, is our desire to promote the use of reusable shopping bags, made from cloth, canvas and other more environmentally friendly materials. To aid in both the adjustment away from plastic and toward cloth, we will be giving away a free ChicoBag to each customer who makes a purchase of $50 or over. These bags are full size, yet stuff into an attached pouch for easy storage and transportation. They are attractive and made of durable & washable material. I’ve personally been using one for the past few weeks and have found them more sturdy and effective than either regular plastic or paper shopping bags. Plus, it’s nice to know that in the past month I’ve already not used a dozen or so bags.
We hope that you will be as proud of this change as we are and help us to promote the use of reusable bags. We’ve only one Earth and we should do all we can to take care of her.
Have a good day,
Kyle
