Win a bike

Filed under: General News — Kyle at 9:50 am on Thursday, July 23, 2009

Next time you are in the store, don’t miss the opportunity to win a new Jamis bicycle. The bike was donated to us from our friends over at Coca-Cola, and we are raffling it off in our store. So, jot your name and number on a ballot and maybe it’ll be yours. Perhaps you can actually ride it next year, when it doesn’t rain every twelve minutes.

Iced Coffee

Filed under: General News, New Products — Kyle at 12:20 pm on Thursday, July 16, 2009

EthiopianOK, so the amount of sunshine we’ve received recently isn’t really up to most people’s standards. But, that shouldn’t dissuade you from enjoying some nice summertime drinks. I recently discovered a coffee variety that makes a fantastic cup of iced coffee. It’s the Organic Ethiopian coffee from our friends at Equal Exchange.

Grown in the southern state of Sidamo, this exotic and complex coffee has heavy body, gentle acidity and hints of vanilla, black pepper and raspberry, and lives up to Ethiopian coffee’s well-deserved reputation for excellence. These factors also make this coffee a very suitable variety for iced coffee. I tried it after being recommended it by a friend of mine, and I was pleasantly surprised with how delicious and quenching it was, while providing, of course, that nice coffee kick.

If you are a fan of iced coffees, I suggest giving this variety a try. We are currently carrying it in our coffee section and it is available in 12oz bags of whole beans. Also, if you’d like some tips on iced coffee brewing methods and preparation, check out this article.

Local Corn!

Filed under: General News — Kyle at 12:04 pm on Monday, July 13, 2009

Well, looks like some local corn showed up earlier than I was expecting. What a delightful surprise! Come on by, we have absolutely delicious Mazza’s corn available at the store. It’s quite possibly the best part about Summer, or this rain-drenched, soggy thing we call Summer.

This Sunday, the 5th of July, is Customer Appreciation Day here at the Shelburne Supermarket. Stop in the store and receive a free copy of the Burlington Free Press. This is only while supplies last, but we are going to be receiving vastly more papers than usual, so, you know, come get one. See you on Sunday!

Eat local

A little while back, I wrote about a few great things associated with Summertime. However, I left out an incredibly significant subject. Local Produce!

As we get further into the summer, every day seems to bring with it fresh, delicious produce from local farms. Here are some of our local producers and the great products they have arriving in our store.

Stony Loam Farm- This farm, just next door to us in Charlotte, offers some of the best lettuce you’ll find.
Lewis Creek Farm - From Starksboro, this farm offeres baby spinach, (adult?) spinach, scallions, & radishes.
Britante’s -  Amazing strawberries and rhubarb from down Colchester way.
Arethusa Collective Farm - Fresh kale, romaine, mesclun, zucchini & summer squash.
Rockville Mountain Farm -Another great source for succulent strawberries.
Pleasant Hill - Out of Cornwall, this farm offers zucchini, summer squash, and you guessed it, yummy strawberries.

That is just a sampling of what we have to offer in our fresh produce section. Come by and see what local delights we have today. And don’t forget, soon enough, that local corn will be showing up. If you’re anything like me, your August diet consists of corn with a side of corn.

Kapa ga nossa,
Kyle
